Director of the Revue française de science politique and a researcher at CEVIPOF, he devoted his work to the electoral behaviour of the French, to voting cycles and to parliamentarism under the Fifth Republic. He belonged to the generation that made political science an empirical discipline.
The story
Born in Paris on 8 June 1937, son of Alexandre Parodi — de Gaulle's delegate-general in occupied France —, Jean-Luc Parodi ran the Revue française de science politique for seventeen years, the journal in which the discipline publishes what matters.
A researcher at CEVIPOF, the political research centre of Sciences Po, he worked on what can be measured: voting behaviour, electoral cycles, the effects of one ballot system over another.
His other ground was parliamentary government under the Fifth Republic — the real weight of an Assembly that the 1958 Constitution had weakened, and that remains oddly little known.
General secretary of the French Political Science Association for twenty years, he belonged to the generation that made French political science an empirical discipline, built on polling data and long series rather than on commentary.
He died on 21 January 2022 and rests in Division 40, that of General Augereau and of Marguerite Saqui, the tightrope walker who danced on a rope above the festivities of the Empire.
