Pierre Charras acted in some fifteen films before he turned to the novel, and then wrote nothing but short books: “Monsieur Henri” won him the Prix des Deux Magots in 1995, “Dix-neuf secondes” the Prix du roman Fnac in 2003. He also translated from English. He died in 2014, and this translator has for an epitaph a line of Shakespeare, but in French: “Bonne nuit, doux prince” — good night, sweet prince, the words Horatio speaks to Hamlet dying in his arms.
The story
Born at Saint-Étienne in 1945, Pierre Charras was an actor first — some fifteen films, the stage, translations from English — before he gave himself to the novel.
“Monsieur Henri” won him the prix des Deux Magots in 1995, “Dix-neuf secondes” the prix du roman Fnac in 2003: short books, tightly held.
He died in 2014 and lies in Division 53, chemin du Bastion, third line. On the stone, under his name and the word “écrivain”, writer, a line of Hamlet in French: “Bonne nuit, doux prince” — good night, sweet prince.
