The story
A republican under an Empire that had no use for republicans, Edmond Adam took his place beside Ledru-Rollin, one of the great voices of 1848. The fall of the regime opened the careers it had closed: he was made prefect of police of Paris in October 1870, resigned three weeks later, then became a senator and Gambetta's trusted man.
His household counted for as much as his offices. He had married Juliette Lamber, a woman of letters whose salon would become one of the most sought-after of the Third Republic. He died in 1877; she outlived him by nearly sixty years.
Their grave is in Division 54, avenue des Ailantes. Aimé Millet had sculpted the senator's bronze bust for it: the bust was stolen in 2006, and nothing has come to replace the missing portrait.
That leaves the inscription, which holds one last surprise. It has Juliette Lamber dying in 1938, when she died in 1936. The stone adds two years to her.
