Pierre Abelard, a theologian, and Heloise, his student who became his secret wife, lived through a twelfth-century love affair and correspondence that remain famous to this day. Their presumed remains were transferred to Père-Lachaise in 1817, into a Gothic tomb built using elements from the former Paraclete convent.
