Camille Pissarro was born on 10 July 1830 in Saint Thomas, in the Danish West Indies (now the US Virgin Islands), to a merchant father of Portuguese Jewish descent and a Creole mother. Having settled in France, he became one of the pillars of Impressionism, and rests at Père-Lachaise alongside his son, the painter Paulémile Pissarro.
