Modigliani died of tubercular meningitis on 24 January 1920, at thirty-five, and was buried at Père-Lachaise before an immense crowd. Pregnant with their second child, Jeanne Hébuterne threw herself from a window two days later; her family first had her buried at Bagneux, far from him. It was not until 1921 that her remains were transferred to lie beside Modigliani, in Division 96.
