As soon as the Nazis came to power in 1933, Bellmer refused to do any work of use to the regime. His work was denounced as degenerate; he fled Germany in 1938 and was even interned at the Camp des Milles on his arrival in France, before joining the Resistance and later the Parisian Surrealists.
