Confessor to Louis XIV from 1675 to 1709, Father de La Chaise is said to have used his influence to end the king's affair with Madame de Montespan and to have encouraged his marriage to Madame de Maintenon. He left his name to the estate where he lived, and later to the cemetery that would be created there a century afterwards.
